The Movie „The Giver“ was made in 2014 by Philipp Noyce and features popular actors like Taylor Swift and Jeff Bridges. The plot is based on the same named dystopian novel by Lois Lowry.
The story is set in the future in a society, where the government controls everything and everybody in what they call the system of sameness. In this world, the 16 year old Jonas, who was played by Brenton Thwaites, gets selected as the Receiver of Memory. Together with The Giver of Memory, he starts questioning whether the system of sameness and the government is really as good as it claims to be.
On his journey, he uncovers many secrets which in the end lead him into having to make a difficult decision that may change his life and the life of everyone else who lifes in his world forever.
The actors do a good job of playing the interesting characters. Especially Jeff Bridges and Brenton Thwaites present the main characters The Giver and Jonas verz believable and well.
Since I didn’t expect much from it, I was actually surpised at how well made the film was made and how many side plots it got that the novel didn‘t, which actually made the story more entertaining than the original novel‘s story.
The film ends after about 90 minutes but as a viewer, you will probably be thinking about Jonas’s decision and the story’s moral for long after.
In conclusion, I can say that I really liked the film. Since the movie’s fsk and jmk rating is 12, I can recommend it to everyone above the age of 12. I am sure that both a younger as well as an older audience find the movie entertaining.
