This is an review to the movie „The Giver“ (ger: „Hüter der Erinnerung„)
The movie “The Giver” based on the same named book by Lois Lowry from the year 2014 focusses on a dystopian world.
The main characters include Jonas, played by Brenton Thwaites, The Giver, played by Jeff Bridges, Fiona and Asher.
The story takes place in a world, where everything is the same and people have no emotions.
Right at the start one of the most important plots of the story takes place. All the Teens including Jonas, Fiona and Asher get assigned a position, but at first they leave Jonas out.
Later, he got assigned a very important role: “The receiver of memory”.
While the others did Jobs where they worked together, Jonas went to a small cabin at the edge of the platform, they live on and received memories, to be able to later help the elders make the decisions based on bis knowledge.
During his training he then finds out that there is way more to see, that has been taken away due to the sameness.
He discovers feelings for Fiona, that have been taken away from his daily medication, that he thought was just for his health.
When finding out all the things that were hidden and taken away, he wants to show them others but fails to do so.
When the elders decided to release, one of the children, Jonas liked and saw as a brother, Gabriel, he had enough and planned an escape, with which the Giver helped him.
To see if he makes it or not, you have to watch the movie 😉
I think that the movie is very well made and transfers the atmosphere created by the author of the novel very well.
It also shows how a world with sameness and without emotions can effect the lives of the people, especially the person or persons knowing that there is more to see and experience and how they want to show the others what could be possible, to turn the world a better place.
Especially the parts that were made more extreme in the movie, made it interesting to watch.
If you are interested in finding out more, I have attached a link to the trailer down below. The movie is available as a DVD, on Apple Movies and other sites. Unfortunately, there is no version on Netflix though. Just keep in mind, that some Versions like the apple one come bundled with behind-the-scenes information that might be important.
Thanks for taking the time to read 😊
“The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It’s the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared.”
